Mr. Ryan Grade 7 Social Studies Classroom Expectations and Syllabus
Course Overview:
Grade 7 social studies will be comprised of two major components. 1. We will cover American history from Our Road to Independence through the American Civil War and Reconstruction. We will utilize various texts, including both primary and secondary sources. This class will include a number of classroom projects and activities to enrich student learning and understanding of American History and the United States Government. We will incorporate current events into classroom discussions and emphasize student’s reading and written skills.
2. We will also have an in-depth study of the Illinois State Constitution.
***The Illinois State Constitution will be taught prior to the 7th grade trip to Springfield, Illinois ***
Text:
Students will be given various handouts of primary and secondary sources, alongside vocabulary worksheets to complete. The students will also have access to numerous maps, cause and effect charts, and graphic organizers.
Materials:
Computers (charged), pens, pencils, social studies notebook, loose leaf paper, notecards and assignment notebook every day! Students should also take note of any additional materials they may need during end of class announcements.
Assignments:
Students will have a number of different types of assignments surrounding the social studies curriculum, including: homework, in class assignments, group work, projects, quizzes, tests, etc.
Grading:
90% Tests, Quizzes, Projects
10% Miscellaneous, graded for completion of assignment
Grading Scale:
90%-100% A
89%-80% B
79%-70% C
69%-60% D
59%-0% F
Behavior Log: A behavior log will be used by 7th grade teachers to monitor individual student behavior on a daily basis. The average weekly percentage will be entered in PowerSchool each week.
Be Responsible : Being prepared for class
Following directions/arrival procedures
Be Respectful: Obtaining permission to talk in class
Being respectful to others/paying attention
Be Safe: Obtaining permission to leave your seat.
Students can earn up to five points a day, 25 per week. If the student earns a 90% score or above, they will earn rewards.
Any student earning below an 80% will receive a lunch detention. If the student continues to earn below 80% on their weekly behavior, they may lose privileges to attend school-wide events planned throughout the year.
Expectations and Rules
1. Be Respectful: Be certain to treat others with respect. Students will be encouraged to share opinions and disagreements in a civil, respectable manner when discussing classroom topics.
2. Be Responsible: Remember to bring everything you need to class and come prepared to work hard while you are here. Each day there will be specific directions on the board for students to follow as they enter the classroom.
3.Raise Your Hand: Respect your classmates and raise your hand before you speak in class. Students are encouraged to share their ideas and opinions in this class, but we must respect one another in the process and always allow others to complete their thoughts without interruption!
4. Ask Questions: Feel free to ask any questions that may come about during a lesson or any part of class. Students are encouraged to ask questions for clarification at any time! We want this learning environment to be a safe and engaging one for all who enter!
Late Work Policy
Should a student forget an assignment, they will need to complete it for partial credit. If they do not do so, they will be asked to stay after school for ZAP on Friday, 2:31-4:15 (Zeroes Aren’t Permissible)
A phone call will be made home and transportation will be provided.
Absent Work
Should a student be absent, it is their responsibility to check the absent work bin or to see me before or after class to retrieve any missed work.
